Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is set to miss the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after undergoing surgery on his Achilles tendon in London on February 26th.
Mohammed Shami Out for IPL 2024
Shami has been battling the injury since the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, where he was India’s leading wicket-taker despite the team’s disappointing campaign. He missed the subsequent tour of South Africa, the home T20I series against Afghanistan, and the ongoing Test series against England.
The surgery, deemed necessary by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, is expected to keep Shami out of action for around six months. This means he will not only miss the IPL, which runs from March 22nd to May 26th, but his participation in the T20 World Cup in June is also under doubt.
Shami’s absence is a major blow for the Gujarat Titans, who are the defending champions. He was the team’s highest wicket-taker in the 2023 season, earning him the Purple Cap award. The Titans have already lost their former skipper Hardik Pandya for the IPL, and are also dealing with injuries to another key player, Rashid Khan.
Shami took to social media to share the news of his surgery and express his optimism for a speedy recovery. He wrote, “Looking forward to getting back on my feet soon,” along with a picture of himself post-surgery.
